The DHS Student Council is looking for volunteers to be a part of their Trunk or Treat this year on Saturday, October 24th from 1-3pm. Oakwood United Methodist Church will host a Pancake & Sausage/Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast which includes a Bake Sale and Craft Fair on Saturday, October 24th from 7:00am to 10:30am. A free will donation will be accepted to support the Oakwood Area Food Pantry and the church’s missions, such as Cunningham Children’s Home, Midwest Mission Distribution Center, the Appalachia Service Project (ASP) which helps families make repairs they cannot afford to make on their homes, and any other needs during the year.
Join United Way of Danville Area on Thursday, October 29th from 11:30am-1:00pm for lunch and a conversation about giving with purpose. Guest speaker Shari Fox, founder and principal of Fox Philanthropic Advisors LLC, will discuss charitable giving decisions that are meaningful to them and their communities. She’ll also discuss the Illinois Gives Tax Credit and how it relates to giving through the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois and United Way of Danville Area. Hosted by American Legion Post 210, the 10th Annual Veteran’s Day 5K is coming up on Saturday, November 7th. The 5K starts at the Legion, heads north to a residential area before looping back around to finish at the Legion. You are free to run (or walk!) this at your own pace, and refreshments of chili and desserts will be served after the race. Registrations are available online, and can be found on the American Legion Post 210 Facebook page along with additional information about post race activities. The cost is $25 until November 4th, when the price will be raise up to $30. All funds raised from this event will go to support the programs within the American Legion.
St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Fall vendor and craft fair is coming up on Saturday, November 7th from 9am to 3pm in the Parish Hall. Come shop, support local vendors, and get a head start on holiday shopping! The famous St. Anthony’s Tacos will be available for purchase from 11AM until they run out. The Vermilion County Museum Society has an upcoming bus tour you won’t want to miss! On November 7th, the guided bus tour visits Patomac, Armstrong, Collison, Higginsville, and Henning as a part of the Vermilion County 200th celebration. There’s a new exhibit and photos coming to the Vermilion County Museum on Sunday, November 15th of the underground petrified rainforest here in Vermilion County! There will be an open house fro 1:30pm-4pm for anyone to come in and look at the exhibit, and admission is free! Richard Berner will have a special program during the open house starting at 2:30pm for those who want to hear more about the petrified rainforest. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee’s scholarship application is now available at local high schools in Danville. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a 2027 high school graduating senior at a local high school in Danville who plans to pursue his/her education at an institution of higher learning. The selection of the scholarship recipient by the MLK Committee is not based on any racial, religious, ethnic, or cultural affiliation. Therefore, students who meet the criteria listed in the scholarship application are encouraged to apply. Applications for the scholarship will only be accepted on Wednesday, December 2, between 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm at St. James United Methodist Church in Danville. CRIS Healthy Aging and the Illinois Department of Aging are looking for volunteers to help seniors navigate Medicare. They will provide free training to become certified as an Illinois SHIP counselor. Counselors educate consumers and answer questions about Medicare, supplements, and other insurance. They help organize and assist in filing for Medicare and Medicare claims. The Trep School is taking applications for Broadband Grants for businesses. Forty businesses located in Vermilion County can receive up to $500 each towards upgrading their internet service to fiber broadband or towards hosting their business website. The $20,000 in funds for the broadband grants were provided by the Vermilion County Board to Vermilion Advantage as matching funds for the Economic Empowerment Center grant Vermilion Advantage received from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Vermilion Advantage contracted The Trep School to provide the programming for the grant. To be eligible for the grants, business owners must live or have their business located in Vermilion County. Additionally, they must complete an IRS W-9, an application, and 360° Business Assessment and growth plan with The Trep School. Once eligibility has been determined, The Trep School and Vermilion Advantage will coordinate with the business owner to provide the funds directly to the vendor on the business’s behalf. The Danville Fire Department’s Free Smoke Alarm Program is free for residents within the City of Danville. This initiative is designed to help ensure every home is equipped with working smoke alarms, a critical component of fire safety and early detection. Through this program, Danville residents can request free smoke alarms and professional installation by trained personnel. The goal is to reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities by making homes safer and more prepared. Anyone interested in participating in the Free Smoke Alarm Program is encouraged to register through the department’s new Community Connect platform at www.communityconnect.io/info/il-danville or call the Danville Fire Department at 217-431-2350 to schedule their installation and provide important household information that can assist first responders in an emergency.
The Danville Library Foundation is excited to continue working with with Newell Township to bring Little Free Libraries to the community. Jim Wilson with Newell Township will be providing the Little Free Libraries, and the Danville Library Foundation has committed to filling them with books for the community. The two organizations felt this outreach project worked to support the community in promoting literacy and engagement by making books accessible to all. These Little Free Libraries will function in the way of “Take a Book, Leave a Book.” Be sure to keep an eye out and visit the Little Free Library in your area!

The 8th Annual Library Crawl Starts is under way! It’s the perfect opportunity to discover just how much you can do with your library card. How does it work? Beginning on October 1st, you can pick up an “8th Annual Library Crawl Passport” from the Westville Public Library. You’ll get a swag bag for picking up your passport. Next, Visit 5 participating Libraries during the month of October. Westville counts as one! Have each library stamp your passport, then bring your 5 stamps back to the Westville Public Library by November 4th to be entered to win a $40 Rich’s gift certificate!
