WITY met with Ryan Goodner at the Vermilion County Animal Shelter to discuss the issue of seasonal increases in animal population and any changes or rumors of change. The short answer is there are no major changes, but the challenges continue. At this time of year, as is typical, the number of cats surrendered or delivered to the Shelter is increasing. While the cat population at the Shelter has increased as is typical for this time of year, they are not yet over capacity, but the increase in population can be challenging. Efforts to adopt are increasing. You can look forward to new events or announcements to increase adoptions in the coming months from the Animal Shelter. In the meantime there are efforts being made to handle the increasing population by juggling space and resources to care for these animals. The public is being asked to step up and help by adopting if you are able to do so. The County and City of Danville will be meeting on August 19th to discuss their continued relationship for services provided by contract to the City. The results of that meeting may determine the future of services in the City.
