The Fischer Theatre announced a fundraising campaign Wednesday. The $30,000 matching donation campaign will support key restoration and tribute projects. Three area families have already pledged $5,000 each. Up to $15,000 in community donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar from these pledges, netting a total of $30,000 in support for critical projects. Ashton Greer, Interim Director, says, “This campaign is not just about preserving the building– it’s about honoring the people and stories that have shaped the Fischer. These funds will directly impact how we serve the public and celebrate the legacy of those who’ve made the theatre what it is today.” The $30,000 raised will be split between three different projects, and donors are able to select which project they want their donation to go towards.
The three projects include restoring the original gift shop adjacent to the lobby. Restoration would allow a retail tenant to utilize the space, providing income and added attraction to the theater. $10,000 of donations will join a TIF grant from the City of Danville of just over $10,000.
The second $10,000 will be invested into upgrading the concession area. The upgrade is designed to elevate the guest experience and improve offerings and infrastructure in the refreshment area. The concession area will be renamed in honor of longtime volunteer, Terry Lake. Lake passed away earlier this year and is estimated to have contributed over 5,000 hours to the Fischer’s mission.
The third project is supporting general operating costs. These funds will be earmarked to sustain day-to-day operations. Before recent restructuring, the Fischer cost around $1,000 a day to keep doors open. These funds will be used to continue high quality programming and maintenance of the facility. The campaign will continue until the $15,000 goal is reached. If you are interested in donating or more information, contact Ashton Greer at the Fischer Theatre or visit their website.
In addition to the fundraising campaign, the Fischer announced a film festival featuring Gene Hackman. Hackman grew up in Danville and passed away earlier this year. The event will be held over two days, August 16-17, and feature five movies as well as discussion and special facts hosted by a film critic. Greer hopes the film festival can become an annual event.
