It is election season again in Vermilion County. The Vermilion County Clerk, Robyn Heffern released information on the upcoming primary scheduled March 17, 2026. The first day petitions for established political parties may be circulated is Tuesday, August 5th, 2025. Petition packets must be filed with the Vermilion County Clerk beginning Monday, October 27th, 2025 at 8:00 a.m. thru Monday, November 3rd, 2025 by 5:00 p.m. The order in which candidates file will determine their placement on the ballot. In the event two candidates file for the same office and are of the same party, a lottery will be held at a later date and time to determine ballot placement. Local offices to be nominated at the March 17, 2026 General Primary Election include County Clerk, County Treasurer, County Sheriff, Supervisor of Assessments, Board of Review, Regional Superintendent of Schools and County Board Members. Precinct Committeepersons will be elected at the General Primary Election.
So far, petitions for countywide offices have been picked up by Michael Hartshorn for Sheriff, Robyn Heffern for County Clerk, Nate Byram for Supervisor of Assessments, Darren Duncan for Treasurer. As a note, with the current Sheriff, Pat Hartshorn not running for re-election, it will mean that the longest tenured, elected sheriff in the State currently is stepping down at the end of his long career. As more countywide petitions are picked up, we will keep you posted. Petitions can be picked up anonymously so we may not have all candidate names until the filing deadline.
