On July 22, 2025, Elrico Donelson, formerly of Danville, Illinois, pleaded guilty to Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon and was sentenced to 7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The State presented evidence that on May 21, 2024, an officer with the Danville Police Department was on patrol when he observed a vehicle to be illegally parked. As law enforcement approached, some people in the area of the vehicle fled on foot. Donelson was observed by officers as he exited the passenger side of the vehicle and was the only individual observed to be in the vehicle at that time. A number of guns were recovered, including one personally possessed by Donelson. The defendant was also identified in various social media posts, which showed him in possession of the same gun. Earlier in the year, January 18, 2024, Donelson was charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, a class 2 felony. He was released on January 22, 2024 with conditions. On May 21st 2024 he was again arrested for the felony of Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon. The previous felony occurred elsewhere and not in Vermilion County according to court records. In the plea agreement, Donelson pleaded guilty to both offenses, and will serve three years for possession of a stolen vehicle and 7 years for Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, a class 2 felony. Both sentences will be served at the same time rather than separately. Also, the Defendant will serve 50% of the sentence under the law and be given credit for 433 days served in the local jail against both sentences.
