The Danville City Council has voted against allowing cannabis dispensaries to be located in more areas of the city. Currently they can only locate along Lynch Road. The proposal would have allowed dispensaries to get a special use permit along other city road. Mayor Rickey Williams is disappointed the change was defeated.
The zoning ordinance change was defeated by a 6-7 vote. One alderman was absent.
Those favoring the change said such dispensaries can provide a legal, safe product and bring tax dollars into the city. The opponents either were against cannabis in general, or thought the change would bring such businesses next to residents.
There is one cannabis dispensary now operating along Lynch Road another is under construction. Two others were stopped by fear that there could be saturation of such businesses in the same area. One of those companies went to Tilton.
